D
It was a stormy night. Pinocchio had a great fear of thunder and lightning, but hunger was far greater than fear. So he made a rush for the village. But he found it was dark and the stores were all closed. In the streets, not even a dog could be seen. It seemed to be the land of the dead.
Pinocchio took hold of the bell of a house and began to ring it with all his strength(力量),saying to himself,“Someone will surely answer that!”
He was right. An old man in a nightcap(睡帽) opened the window and shouted at him angrily,“What do you want at such an hour?”
“Would you be kind enough to give me a little bread?” asked Pinocchio.
“Wait a minute and I will come right back,” said the old man, thinking it was one of those naughty boys who played tricks to wake people who were sleeping quietly. After a minute, the window was opened again and a basin of water was poured down on him, wetting him from head to foot.
He returned home like a wet chicken, feeling tired and hungry. He sat down on a small chair and put his feet on the stove(火炉) to dry them. Then he fell asleep. When he slept, his wooden feet began to burn, and little by little they burnt away. At daybreak,a knock on the door woke him up.
It was his father.
Poor Pinocchio who was still half asleep, had not yet found that his feet disappeared. As soon as he heard his father's voice,he jumped up from his seat to open the door. But as he did so,he fell down on the floor heavily. “Open the door for me!” shouted Geppetto. “Dear Father,I can't,because someone has eaten my feet,” answered Pinocchio, crying and rolling about on the ground.
Geppetto thought it was only one of Pinocchio's tricks. He climbed up the wall and went in through the window angrily. But when he saw Pinocchio lying on the ground really without feet,he was very sad. He took him in his arms and kissed him. He cried sadly,“My little Pinocchio! How did you burn your feet?”
“I don't know,Father, but it has been such a terrible night that I shall never forget.”
