I must have always known reading is very important because the earliest things I can remember are about books. There was not one night when Mum didn't read me a storybook. I was interested in the fun way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mum was reading. I wanted to be like my mum and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.
This is how I learned to read. I would start off with the easiest things and then move on to stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl who didn't start school, I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. My progress in reading raised my inquisitiveness, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself tell my mum to drive more slowly so that I could read all the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading during school years was about facts. I read for knowledge, and to make A's on my tests. I liked facts. I didn't enjoy reading novels. I thought anything abstract(抽象的) left too much room for argument.
Yet, since I'm growing up and the world that I once thought was so simple is no longer so, I find by opening a novel, I can leave my worries and problems behind and enter amazing worlds where I am a new character. In these worlds, I can become anyone. I don't have to write down what happened or the writer's writing skills. I just read to relax.
Reading keeps us learning and growing up.
