Zebrafish Aquanauts Return to Space
On 15 January, 2025, four zebrafish were sent back to China's Tiangong space station. They are part of a scientific experiment to study how animals live in space. These little
"aquanauts"(鱼航员) are living in a special water tank inside the Wentian lab module.
This is not the first time zebrafish have been in space. They were chosen because they are small and easy to take care of, and share many genes with humans. By studying how they grow and develop in microgravity(微重力), scientists hope to learn more about human health in space.
The experiment includes observing the fish's behaviour, growth, and reproduction. Scientists are also collecting data on the water quality and lighting in the tank. This information will help them understand the long-term effects of space travel on animals and potentially on humans.
The zebrafish are expected to stay in space for several months. Their journey is an important step in China's space exploration programme, contributing valuable data for future long-duration space missions. The success of this experiment could help develop life support systems for future human space travellers.
1. What is the main reason zebrafish were chosen for the space experiment?
A. They are very smart.
B. They look like astronauts.
C. They are easy to manage and similar to humans genetically.
D. They can eat space food.
2. Where are the four zebrafish living in the space station?
A. In the core module.
B. In the Wentian lab module.
C. In the Mengtian lab module.
D. Outside the space station.
3. What do scientists hope to learn by studying the zebrafish?
A. How to train fish for space travel.
B. How to raise fish in space.
C. How microgravity affects animal and human health.
D. How to build better space stations.
4. How long are the zebrafish expected to stay in space?
A. A few days.
B. A few weeks.
C. Several months.
D. About a year.
5. What is the experiment with the zebrafish important for?
A. Developing faster rockets.
B. Learning more about the moon.
C. Building bigger space stations.
D. Supporting future human space missions.
