On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene moved toward Florida's west coast, and the local government ordered people to leave Indian Rocks Beach—a protective island only 7 to 10 feet above sea level. Weather reporters said the Category 4 storm would pass more than 160 kilometers away, so many people, including surf instructor Marty Thomas, chose to stay.

As night fell, the island lost power, and huge floodwaters broke through the seawalls, flooding the streets rapidly. Thomas watched the water rise to three feet high in minutes and warned his neighbours at once. He helped Mike Moran and Heather Boles put their pets and belongings into a Jeep, helped a sick elderly neighbour out of bed and into the car, and woke two more neighbours, who left in their own Jeep with their pets.
With water nearly reaching the headlights, the group left, and Thomas stayed as his home flooded. He picked up a strong 12-foot paddleboard, put his valuable things and a flashlight on it, and paddled through the dark, flooded streets to his friend George Grant's apartment.
Tying his board to a tree in about one-meter-deep water, Thomas heard a woman crying for help from a balcony: a woman was trapped in an apartment across a flooded street. He rushed over and found Valerie Anderson was stuck with her dog.
The rising water stuck the door, and Anderson dared not leave alone, fearing she might slip in the rushing water with hidden things under it. "Go to the side window!" Thomas shouted. Anderson pushed open the bedroom window, and Thomas climbed in to help her and the dog out. He balanced the dog on the board's nose, had Anderson hold onto the board's side, and swam them through strong winds to a safe townhouse where Anderson could take shelter.
A distant fire turned the horizon orange, and glowing water from the flood gave off a strange green light—neighbours shined flashlights from their balconies to show them the way.
Thomas's quick thinking and selfless courage turned this terrifying storm night into a touching survival story. Amid Hurricane Helene's fury, he not only helped his neighbours get out of danger

but also risked his own safety to save a stranger and her pet. His ordinary yet heroic acts expressed the true spirit of community: when the disaster happens, human kindness and courage shine the brightest, connecting people and becoming the strongest protection against nature's power.
