C
Tea is loved by people around the world for many reasons—

it's tasty, relaxing, and often part of daily life. But here's an
important tip: never drink hot tea right away. You should let it
cool down a little first. Why does temperature matter so much?
A new study published in the International Journal of Cancer has the answer.
"Many people enjoy tea, coffee, or other hot drinks," said Dr Farhad Islami from the
American Cancer Society, who led the study."But our research shows that drinking very hot
drinks can raise the risk of esophageal cancer. So you should wait until they cool down
before taking a sip."
For the study, Dr Islami and his team followed over 50,000 people aged 40 to 75. During
the research, 317 of these people developed esophageal cancer. According to the National Cancer
Institute, around 17,290 Americans get this cancer every year. What's more, only about 19
percent of patients survive for five years after being diagnosed.
The scientists made a key discovery: people who drank 700 mL of hot drinks or more every day—at 60 ℃ or hotter—had a 90 percent higher risk of esophageal cancer.
This was compared to those who drank the same amount of drinks at temperatures below 60 ℃.
This isn't the first time such a link has been found. Back in 2022, the World Health
Organization also released a report. It confirmed that drinking very hot drinks of
any kind can increase the risk of cancer.
