Air raid shelters(防空洞) are special places in Chongqing that quietly but powerfully witness the history of Chongqing. They are not just part of the city's memory, but they are more like living history books, telling stories of the past. During the war, Chongqing was under the threat of many air attacks(袭击). To protect the people, many shelters were built across the city. Most of them were dug deep into the mountains, and the thick stone walls could offer a safe place in difficult times.
These shelters were like “underground homes” for Chongqing locals back then. No matter when the attacks happened, people would carry their belongings and hurry inside. Though the space was crowded and dark, everyone helped one another. They shared words of comfort as they waited for the danger to pass. Volunteers worked hard to keep order and offer supplies, which brought warmth to the darkness. In these shelters, many acts of bravery and kindness took place. They showed the strength and togetherness of people in Chongqing.
Today, these shelters have been given new life and purpose. Many have been changed into cultural sites(遗址) where visitors can learn about history through photos and stories. Some have even become special underground bookstores, art spaces, or restaurants. They connect the weight of history with the peace of modern life. On hot summer days, people get together in these cool shelters to read, talk, or enjoy a cup of tea.
Air raid shelters show the spirit of people—positive and always moving forward. And the same spirit continues to this day, even though the city grows and changes. They remind us to honour(尊敬) the ancestors and value the peace we have today. They teach us that light can shine through darkness and history can always inspire us to build a better tomorrow.

1. B 词义猜测题。根据下文“They are not just part of the city's memory, but they are more like living history books, telling stories of the past.”
