Located in the northwest of China, the Taklimakan Desert is the biggest desert in China. It has been a serious concern because it's extremely(极其) large—covering about 337,600 square kilometres—and there are lots of sandstorms that come from it. These sandstorms are harmful to the environment and people living nearby. To deal with this problem, a big project to build a 3,046-kilometre-long green belt(带) around the desert was started.
By the end of 2023, 2,761 kilometres of this green belt had already been built. In November 2024, the final 285 kilometres, mostly in the south of the desert where the sandstorms are super bad, were finished.
The building of this green belt used many different scientific ways. For example, a system was created to stop the sand. This system has three main parts: sand barriers(屏障), straw checkerboards(草方格沙障), and tree belts. These parts work together to stop the desert from growing bigger.
Since the green belt was successfully completed, it has brought great benefits. First, it has improved the natural environment around the desert. Now, sandstorms are fewer and less severe(严重的). Second, it has protected the farmland near the desert. So, farmers can grow plants more easily. Also, living conditions in both cities and the countryside have become better. Because there are fewer sandstorms, there is less harm to things like roads and buildings, and more people come to visit. So, the local people can make more money from tourism(旅游业).
This project shows that China is determined to stop the desert from getting worse and improve the natural environment.
