Zhang Qian was a Chinese diplomat(外交家)and explorer in the Western Han Dynasty. In 138 BCE，Zhang Qian set off from Chang'an to ask for support from the Da Yuezhi people in Central Asia to help his country fight against the Xiongnu. In 126 BCE，Zhang Qian
managed to go back to Chang'an. Emperor Wu was highly pleased with what he had achieved，so in 119 BCE，he sent Zhang Qian to visit the Wusun Kingdom.
Today，the Silk Road is based on Zhang Qian's visits. He is known as "the first Chinese to open his eyes to the world" and "the Columbus of the East".
Columbus，born in Italy in 1451，was a great explorer. When Columbus was young，he studied geography，and he believed the earth was round and he could reach the East by sailing(航行)west. He wanted to find a new sea route(路线)from Europe to China and India. With the Spanish royal family's support，Columbus had three ships. Columbus and his sailors(水手)started sailing from Spain on 3 August 1492. In the early hours of 12 October，they discovered an "island". Columbus didn't realize that he had arrived in the Americas. He thought it was India. After that，he sailed again in 1493，1498，and 1502.
From then on，people from Europe and the Americas began doing business with each other.
