Nong Jiagui was born in 1966. He is a village teacher in Guangnan County, Yunnan Province. He was named one of the 2024 National Role Models for Teaching and Educating People(全国教书育人楷模). Let's read about his story.
Nong, a member of the Zhuang ethnic group(壮族), lived 10 kilometers away from "the leprosy(麻风) village". He grew up hearing villagers talk about "that village" and was scared by his parents like "We'll send you to that village if you don't behave(表现) well". Many years later, though, he moved to the village to teach the local children.
In 1986, Nong Jiagui came to "the leprosy village". He was the first teacher in this village. He saw the sad faces of the old people. He knew that kids there wanted to learn things. He decided to teach the children well. He also wanted to help them get out of the village. He named the village Luosongdi the second year he came.
After Nong came, all school-age children could go to school. The village has become more open to the outside world. "As long as one child in the village needs me, I will keep on teaching," Nong said.
