Tenzin Dargye lives at the foot of Anyemaqen, a large snow mountain in Qinghai. He knows the result of climate change all too well. "When I was a child, there was a river in front of my house," said the 38-year-old. "It could reach my knees in summer. But now, the river is gone. Anyemaqen has about 40 ice rivers and they can tell climate change. The mountain also has cultural meaning. "It's special to people living here," said Dargye. "Seeing the snowy top melting bit by bit, we felt we should do something." Dargye and about ten other villagers formed an environmental protection team. They studied the ice rivers and wildlife. The team found that the ice rivers would start melting every year in mid-May. The melting would stop around October when temperatures dropped. The team then agreed to study the ice rivers twice a year — on May 15 and October 15.
It's not easy to carry on the study. Without professional training, the team came up with their own ways. They used a large stone near the end of the ice river as their starting point. They then wrote down the distance between the stone and the snow line. Sometimes, the work can be dangerous, but they believe it is valuable. "We all grew up here," said one old villager. "We can't just sit back and do nothing."
In 2023, researcher Mr. He visited Anyemaqen. After learning about the villagers' work, he helped them improve their ways and make the work safer.
