Nowadays，people are discussing whether good manners are still as important as they used to be. Some think manners are very important，while others believe they are old - fashioned and not necessary.
On the one hand，many people believe that manners are the basic rules for getting on well with others. They teach us how to behave properly. For example，using a knife and fork in the right way at the table can show respect. Also，good manners create a friendly environment. People can spend time together without worrying about offending（冒犯）each other.
On the other hand，some people feel that manners can put too much pressure on people to fit in. What’s more，good manners can be different from one culture to another. For example，in some countries，it’s polite to eat with your hands，while in others，using chopsticks is expected. Besides，they argue that being polite doesn’t always reflect true feelings. If people are kind to each other，there is no need to follow set（固定的）rules. Also，manners have changed over time. About 100 years ago，children were expected to be quiet unless an adult spoke to them，which is very different from today.
