Mercury thermometers (水银体温计) are cheap and accurate (准确的). People have been using them for many years. However, China has decided to stop making mercury thermometers from January 1, 2026.
Safety is the main (主要的) reason. Mercury is very poisonous (有毒的). Before we use a thermometer, we need to shake it hard. We should let the mercury go below $35° C$. *If we shake it too hard and it hits a hard thing or falls to the ground, the thermometer will break easily. Then, the mercury will fall onto the ground and become small silver beads. If we do not clean them up in time, they will turn into mercury vapour (蒸气).
Now hospitals hardly use mercury thermometers. It usually takes quite a long time (about 5 to 10 minutes) to take temperatures. So it's not convenient. We have better choices, such as digital thermometers, non-contact forehead thermometers and contact ear thermometers. They are easy to use and work fast. They are also accurate enough. So mercury thermometers will be slowly replaced in our daily life.
