It's hard to think of a place more dangerous than Death Valley. It is the hottest and driest place in North America.
Living in Death Valley is not easy. It gets less than two feet of rain every year, and it's very hot too. In July, the temperature often goes above $46° \mathrm{C}$. There's even a lake that has become salt crystals（晶体）。But at night, it gets cold. When it's cold enough, the water on the ground turns into thin ice. Then strong winds—like a big hand—can move rocks across the icy ground. That's why rocks in Death Valley seem to "walk" by themselves.
Even though Death Valley's weather is terrible, it's still full of life. Nothing stops plants and animals from making their homes here. People have found over 1,000 kinds of plants there. There are also 51 kinds of mammals（哺乳动物），6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. And not all the animals are small.
Finding water is the biggest problem for all living things here. Some plants have roots that go 50 feet underground to get water. Kangaroo rats get the water they need from flowers.
