五、阅读理解
As a child of a family moving from Barbados to New York, my childhood was different from that of my friends. My mum had serious rules for me. I must be home before nine. I was only allowed to watch television two hours a week. In the summer, I had to write book reports besides taking part in a leadership camp.
Besides these, the rule that wasn't reasonable was that my mother didn't allow me to have role models. She'd always say, "You're allowed to follow certain qualities of a person, but you can never place that person on a pedestal(盲目崇拜)." While as a 1980s child I loved a popular actress, Mum refused to have me work hard to be like the actress. She always said, "There is only one actress like her and only one child like you. Create your own success, Diana."

I wanted to be the best and tried my best to lead a "successful" life that many role models have—to get more money and better job chances, to be more popular among all kinds of the people. Many times, I was rewarded(奖励) for meeting some standards of success. But after my sense of achievement(成就) wore off, I came back to my secret reality of feeling empty.
Then in my mid-thirties, I decided to live out my life instead of depending on other people's intentions(意愿). I finally understand that Mum didn't want any person—no matter how successful—to have control over my thoughts and dreams. As my mum said, "No one else can live your life's purpose better than you, Diana."

【分析】
本题为英语阅读理解题,需结合原文内容逐一分析各题:
1. 第1题是细节理解题,需定位原文中母亲的规则,找出不允许做的事;
2. 第2题是词义猜测题,结合上下文语境推断划线词含义;
3. 第3题是句子还原题,需分析空格前后的逻辑关系,选择符合语境的句子;
4. 第4题是主旨大意题,需梳理全文核心内容,确定最佳标题;
读后词汇拓展需根据短语常用含义作答。
【解析】
1. 第1题:原文第一段提到母亲要求“我”必须九点前回家(对应①,即不允许九点后到家),第二段明确母亲不允许“我”有榜样(对应④),因此选C;
2. 第2题:划线词所在句意为“那个不合理的规则是母亲不允许我有榜样”,结合语境,reasonable意为“合理的”,对应选项B(fair意为公平的、合理的);
3. 第3题:空格前是母亲的教导,空格后是作者追求他人的成功却感到空虚,逻辑上是转折,说明作者后来忘记了母亲的教导,因此选D;
4. 第4题:全文核心是母亲教导要活出自己的人生,不要依赖他人的意愿,最后一段“no one else can live your life's purpose better than you”点明主旨,对应选项C;
读后词汇拓展:“according to”的中文意思是“依据;根据”。
