As a form of national intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产), Beijing silk figurines have a history of more than 1,000 years, dating back to the Tang Dynasty. Usually, a traditional silk figurine is mainly made of natural silk.
He Mei is an inheritor(传承者) of Beijing silk figurines. When first seeing the dolls, she was so impressed by their appearances that she decided to learn the skill of making them. Later, she set up her company in 2013 to produce silk figurines.
Now He's team is working hard to make Beijing silk figurines go further. "People are familiar with American Barbie dolls. I want to turn Beijing silk figurines into 'Chinese Barbie dolls'," she said.
Traditional Chinese culture is the main source(来源) of the inspiration(灵感) for their designs. The first Beijing silk figurines the team produced were modelled after different roles in Beijing opera. The team has also turned well-known characters from other Chinese operas into figurines.
To make their products more popular, He's team has developed complete DIY tool bags. People can create a figurine of their own within an hour.
Besides, He's company has even worked with robot companies to power their figurines with technology. "The connection of the ancient folk art with technology will make people even more interested in the art," He said.
