热考素材 中华优秀传统文化 In June 2024, the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology made an announcement. They discovered "people under the tree" wall paintings. They dated back to the Tang Dynasty in a tomb in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province.
The tomb is the latest among the dated Tang Dynasty burial chambers(墓室) decorated(装饰) with "people under the tree" wall paintings found in Taiyuan. The discovery really helps us study "people under the tree" artworks. The artistic style was very popular during the Tang Dynasty.
In the main room of the tomb, the paintings on the southern part of the east wall show a life situation. On the left, the painting shows a man pushing a stone mill(磨) while a woman is working on the mill. On the far right, the painting shows a man cooking food. He has an iron pan in front of him. The pan sits atop a fire.
The lower left shows a man stepping on a pestle(杵), a rice pounding tool made of wood and stone, with a bamboo basket next to the pestle. On the right side of the painting, a woman is getting water from a well using something for raising and lowering the bucket(桶) in a well. Finally, on the far right, the painting ends with the picture of a stove and a large steaming pot on it.
A bit further in the painting, we can still see mountains and trees. And in the near distance, a woman in a long skirt is holding a box with both hands. Behind her, we can see a foreign trader in a yellow robe(长袍), holding the reins(缰绳) of the camels and horses in his hands.
Long Zhen, a famous expert, explained that the tomb lies on the western side of the mountain facing Taiyuan. The area is an important burial area in the west of the city. Hundreds of tombs in Tang Dynasty have been discovered there.
