The Group of 77 is a very important group for developing countries in the world. After World War II, many developing countries got political independence, but they still faced many economic problems. The old international economic order was unfair to them. They then wanted to work together to protect their own interests and improve their lives.
So on June 15th, 1964, during the first UN Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva, 77 developing countries signed the Joint Declaration of 77 Developing Countries.
That was the start of the Group of 77. Now it has more than 130 member states, but it still keeps the old name.
The group works to strengthen the cooperation among developing countries, push for a fairer international economic order, and help members achieve better development in trade, education and health. It gives developing countries a strong united voice in the world.
China is a developing country and a close partner of the Group of 77. China doesn't belong to this organization, but it supports the group's goals and works closely with it. China shares its development experience, helps the members of this group build roads, schools and hospitals, and supports fairer global management. Together, China and the group keep working for a fairer and better world for developing countries.
