De Lesseps was building a canal between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, but it was not finished. The only way to the Mediterranean was to go around Africa.
“We have been on this submarine for three years,” said Ned. “When will it end? What could I say? I didn’t want to end. If you see a chance to escape, tell me about it. Until then, we can only wait.”
Five days later, we passed the city of Muscat and entered the Gulf of Aden. I thought the captain would turn back, but he did not. The following day, we entered the Red Sea. I looked for hours through the open panels at the wonderful coral reefs there. The colours were brilliant, and I saw many rare fish in the clear water. I talked to Captain Nemo about the name and history of the Red Sea. “It has always been a dangerous place for ships because of the currents and reefs. The day after tomorrow, we will be in the Mediterranean,” he said.
“The Mediterranean? That is not possible!” I said. “Why not?” he asked.
“You cannot sail around Africa in two days!”
“We will not sail around Africa!” I was speechless. Could the Nautilus sail on dry land?
“There is a passage,” explained the captain. “It is under the ground. I discovered it. I saw that some fish in the Mediterranean were the same as some in the Red Sea. I caught some of them in the Red Sea. I put tags on them and put them back in the water. I went to the Mediterranean and caught my tagged fish there. Then, I knew that there was a passage.” I explored the Red Sea in the Nautilus and told them what Captain Nemo had said. Conseil clapped his hands. Ned, however, would not believe it. “I would love to be in the Mediterranean the day after tomorrow,” he said. “However, I think your captain Nemo was playing a trick.”
