Lao She(1899-1966) is one of China's most celebrated writers. Among his many works, the play Teahouse stands out as a masterpiece. Written in 1956, it has three acts and describes the lives of ordinary people in Beijing from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Through the story of Wang Lifa and his customers, the play also reflects(反映) the great changes in Chinese society over those fifty years.
Lao She was born in Beijing. In 1913, his mother sent him to a teacher's school. After graduating, he became the head teacher of a primary school. In 1924, Lao She went to England, where he taught Mandarin at London University's School of Oriental Studies for five years. During his stay, he read widely and began his writing career. Returning to China in 1930, he wrote many more novels, as well as many plays and short stories that focused on the lives of common people. Because of his great contributions, he was honoured as "the People's Artist".
Today, Lao She Teahouse in Beijing is not only a place to remember the writer but also a lively cultural space. Visitors can enjoy different kinds of Chinese tea and traditional Beijing snacks. Every evening, performances such as Beijing opera, traditional music and magic shows are put on there.
