Turning a Desert into a Forest
In North China, there was a big desert called the Maowusu Desert（毛乌素沙漠）. Many years ago, the land was dry and swept by strong winds. Few plants could grow. Sand often covered people’s houses. Life was very hard.
But the local people did not give up. They began to plant grass and small trees. They saved water in smart ways. They also stopped people from cutting down young trees. They worked year after year, with the help of the government.
Slowly, the sand stopped moving. Green grass and trees came back. Birds and other animals returned. Today, more than half of the desert has become green land. People call it a “green miracle”.
This story shows us that trees can stop deserts. Hard work and never giving up can make our Earth a better place.
