Have you ever tasted Guobaorou? It's a famous dish from Northeast China with a history of over 100 years. During the Qing Dynasty, a cook named Zheng Xingwen made it for foreign guests(客人). To make sure the guests enjoyed the dish, he changed a salty pork dish into a sweet-and-sour one. The guests liked it very much. The new dish later became known as Guobaorou.
To make this dish, we need to cut the pork into thin pieces and put them in a special sauce(酱). Then, cover them with batter and fry them until they are golden. Finally, cook them with other ingredients and a sweet-and-sour sauce. The dish finally tastes sweet, sour and crisp.
The World Guobaorou Contest took place in Jilin on June 29, 2024. More than 280 cooks joined the competition. In the first round, they had to make the dish in the traditional way. In the second round, they used new ideas to change the taste. For example, some cooks added curry(咖喱)to it. In the end, five cooks from Northeast China won the top prizes. Each of them got a prize—a pig!
