Teenagers’ Free Time Then and Now
A recent study compares free-time activities of teenagers in the 1980s and teenagers nowadays.
Thirty years ago, most teens spent most of their spare time outdoors(在户外). On weekdays, after finishing homework, they hung out(闲逛) with neighbours or friends in parks. They rode bikes, played ball games or chatted face to face. During weekends, many went shopping in local malls, watched movies in cinemas or read paper storybooks at libraries. They seldom used electronic(电子的) products, because home computers and smartphones were not popular at that time. Family outdoor trips were their favourite holiday activities.
However, modern teenagers’ free time has changed greatly. Most of their spare time stays indoors. They spend over 3 hours every day on smartphones or pads, chatting on social apps, watching short videos or playing online games. Outdoor sports and face-to-face meetings become less common. Some parents worry that less outdoor activity brings health problems like poor eyesight(视力下降) and weak bodies. Still, many teens say online activities help them make more friends and get useful information easily.
