The Old Street Lamp
At the end of a quiet street stood an old lamp. Every evening, its soft and golden
light guided people safely home. It watched young lovers walk by, old men tell
stories, and children run after each other in its light. For many years, the lamp felt
proud to bring light and comfort to everyone who passed by.
But now, new lamps appeared — bright, shiny ones powered by electricity.
"Your light is weak," said the mayor. "You've done your job well, old
friend, and it's time to rest."
That night, the lamp felt sad. "Will anyone remember me?" it wondered. It was
also afraid of ending up in the landfill. "You have shone for others all your life," the
stars above said. "That is something no darkness can erase."
The next morning, the old watchman with years on the same street took the old
lamp home. He placed it near his garden seat. Every evening, when he lit a small
candle inside, the lamp shone again — not for travellers now, but for one old friend.
He always sat quietly beside it. The lamp felt warm inside. "I may not stand on the
street anymore," it thought, "but I can still bring light to someone's life." Years
passed, and both the watchman and the lamp grew older. When the old lamp could
not be used anymore, it was taken to be melted and remade. It was made into a
candle holder for a young poet. Every night, as the poet wrote by candle light, the
lamp shone again, bringing warmth and light. And so, the old lamp glowed peacefully
until its very last night.
