Hans Christian Andersen: The Man Behind the Fairy Tales
Hans Christian Andersen was a famous Danish writer born in

1805. He came from a very poor family in Odense, Denmark. His
father was a shoemaker who loved reading and often told stories to
his son. Andersen was so fascinated by these stories.
Unfortunately, his father died when he was 11 years old. His
mother, Anne Marie Andersdatter, worked as a washerwoman to
support the family. They lived in a small, simple house, and life was not easy.
As a child, he didn't receive much formal education. He attended a local school
for poor children at seven years old. There, he learnt basic reading and writing.
When he was 14, Andersen moved to Copenhagen alone to follow his dream of
becoming an artist. He first tried working as an actor and singer. However, after
discovering his true talent for writing, he decided to further his education. With the
help of supporters, he attended a grammar school, even though he was older than the
other students.
After that, Andersen started to write not only fairy tales but also novels, poems,
and travel diaries. But he was particularly good at writing wonderful fairy tales. He
wrote more than 150 fairy tales in his life, including "The Little Mermaid", "The
Ugly Duckling", "The Emperor's New Clothes", and "The Little Match Girl". His
stories seem full of magic, but actually they explore themes like love, courage, and
being yourself.
His fairy tales have been translated into more than 100 languages. They
are read by children and adults all over the world. Although he passed away in 1875,
his stories still live on.
