When 12-year-old Yuvi Agarwal first played the keyboard at the Denver Animal Shelter(收容所), dogs barked(吠叫) loudly. But before long, the barking calmed as the boy continued to play.
“It feels good when the dogs calm down,” Yuvi said, smiling.
Two years ago, Yuvi started a group called Wild Tunes. Its goal is to connect volunteer musicians and animal shelters. Wild Tunes has an influence across the US. The programme runs in seven shelters in Texas and one in New Jersey. Now, Yuvi and his mum, Priyanka Agarwal, are celebrating the start of a new programme in Denver.
Yuvi came up with the idea in December 2022 when he took part in a programme to read books to animals. He thought of his goldendoodle, Bozo. Whenever Yuvi played music at home, Bozo would lie down and listen.
“I realised that music would work better for the shelter animals than reading,” he said.
Yuvi's thinking has actually been proved by scientists' studies. They've found that classical music reduces shelter dogs' stress.
The idea to bring Wild Tunes to Denver began when one of the volunteers moved to the city. The volunteer wanted to continue playing music for pups. So, Wild Tunes called the shelter in Denver and started to work together.
The shelter workers sent out a message about the new programme. They quickly heard from 65 people. Volunteers will play music for the shelter's dogs and cats every day.
Yuvi's mother says she isn't sure where Yuvi's deep love for animals came from. The family liked animals before Yuvi was born. Now, they love animals even more. Yuvi has rescued baby birds. He has refused to step on ants or other small insects.
“He's really a change maker,” she said. “He's always teaching people how to be kind.”
