On 19 May 2024, 15-year-old Alkut Dilxat became the youngest Chinese climber to reach the top of Qomolangma. The boy from Urumqi, Xinjiang, arrived at South Base Camp(南部大本营) in Nepal(尼泊尔) on 15 April 2024. He spent 28 days getting used to the environment there. Several days later, when the weather conditions were better, he started climbing with about 10 experienced adult climbers.
On 19 May 2024, Alkut stepped onto the summit of Qomolangma. He broke a record set by Xu Zhuoyuan, a 16-year-old girl from Changsha, Hunan, in 2023. “I was very excited at the summit!” Alkut said. “Reaching the top of Qomolangma is the dream of many climbers, including me. I feel very happy that I realized my dream.”
Alkut began to learn rock climbing at 7, skiing at 8, and ice climbing at 9. He climbed his first mountain at the age of 10 with his father, who joined an outdoor(户外的) rescue team in Xinjiang. Alkut's father said, “He wanted to realize his dream by himself. As a father, I was worried, but as a coach and friend, I wanted to support him more.”
To prepare, Alkut ran 10 kilometres every morning before going to school. He also took professional training at weekends. Besides that, he attended an alpine(高山的) skill training class. His father was very proud. “His abilities have improved a lot,” he said.
