[2026 江苏扬州调研]My new master's name was Jeremiah Barker, but everyone called him Jerry. His wife was called Polly and they had two children, a boy called Harry and a little girl called Dolly. The Barkers were a very happy family.
Jerry had a cab of his own, and two horses, which he drove by himself. His other horse was a tall, white, large-boned animal called "Captain". He was old now.
I never knew a better man than my new master. He liked singing to himself. One of the songs was this: "Come, Father and Mother. And Sister and Brother. Come, all of you, turn to. And help one another."
And so they did; Harry was as clever at stable-work as a much older boy, and always wanted to do what he could. Then Polly and Dolly used to come in the morning to help with the cab while Jerry was giving us cleaning in the yard, and Harry was rubbing the harness (擦马具).
The next morning Harry and Dolly came into the yard to see me and make friends. I loved it when they patted me and spoke in gentle voices.
"Let's call him 'Jack', shall we, Harry?" said Dolly. "Yes, let's," said Harry.
The first week of my life as Jack, the London cab horse was very hard. The noise and the people and the traffic on the streets frightened me. But Jerry was a very good driver, and that helped a lot. Jerry soon found that I was ready to work hard and do my best, and he didn't whip (鞭打) me.
He kept us very clean, and gave us as much food as we wanted. But the best thing was that we had Sundays off.
