Under the hot sun, a young girl jumped onto a tractor and started it. As it moved across the farmland, the dry ground was turned soft and ready for planting. She is Shen Yanfen, a post-90s new farmer.
Born in Guangzhou, Shen studied modern business management at university and once worked in Shenzhen. In 2020, she returned to her hometown because of her father. “My father was getting older. He hoped I could make his cooperative(合作社) stronger to help with farming,” she said.
At first, Shen’s new job was difficult. Local cooperative farmers didn’t think a girl from the city could farm. To make them believe in her, Shen learnt to operate the farm machines and took many farming courses. After a year, she became one of the first women to drive farm machines in her hometown.
While working, Shen noticed traditional farm work was slow. She wanted to make it modern, so she brought in new machines. She also trained a group of young people to use them. Later, her cooperative used machines for all farm work.
To make the farm work much more efficient, she brought five local cooperatives together and set up Guangzhou’s first agricultural machinery cooperative union. After about two years, it grew to eight members. With the union, farm teams worked together and were able to do bigger tasks in a shorter time. Under the leadership of Shen, the union made about 3,000 mu of wasteland good for farming.
But Shen didn’t stop there. In 2023, Shen built a rice brand(品牌) with her team to sell their rice. They shared it on TV and online platforms. Soon, more people knew about the rice so farmers in the union made more money. Now Shen has a big dream: to turn the countryside into a great place for young people to achieve their own dreams.
