Kristen Kruse knew that her friend of more than 20 years, Stephanie Zimmerer, was not the kind of person to give up everything and travel 1,500 miles suddenly. But then Zimmerer received a call with surprising news: Kristen's mother, Sandra Thompson, who had cancer two years earlier, had only a few days left to live. A couple of days later, Zimmerer flew to Florida. After a long, emotional hug filled with tears, Kruse asked her friend for help. After all, they had a wedding to prepare for. Zimmerer did many small tasks and made sure Kruse had everything she needed. On the wedding day, she helped seat the guests and even acted as the flower girl.
The small, warm ceremony and dinner, attended by only a few invited guests, was held in the backyard of Kruse's mother and stepfather's house. During the ceremony, her mom was in the spare bedroom next to a large window. "From there, she could hear some of it, see most of it, and feel all the love in her backyard," Kruse said. That day, Kruse became Kristen Butler.
A few days later, Sandra Thompson passed away. Kristen Butler called her wedding day "the best and worst day of my life", because she felt so many mixed emotions—both joy and sorrow. But she got through it, mostly because of her long-time friend.
"I needed her clear mind to think for me when I couldn't," she said. "I needed her kind words to cheer me up. I needed her hugs. I needed her to say goodbye to my mother for me. I just needed her heart to be with mine. She will never know how much her being here meant to me and my family."
