The First Wheeled Cart
Xi Zhong lived in the early Xia Dynasty, a time when people's lives were simple but full of hard work. He came from a family of inventors. Long ago, Panyu, had created boats that made travel by river much easier. At that time, people carried heavy things by hand or on their backs, walking for miles in the sun or rain. This work was slow, painful, and very tiring. So Xi Zhong wanted to change this.
After his father's death, Xi Zhong took on the big task of inventing a land vehicle to help people move heavy things easily. He spent years drawing designs, testing different shapes, and building small models. But no matter how hard he tried, he failed. Some models broke easily, others couldn't move heavy loads, and none rolled smoothly. Still, he did not lose heart. Instead, he continued learning from his mistakes, improving his designs again and again.
One day, while walking through a village, he saw an old woman grinding(碾) rice with a round stick on a stone mill(磨). As she turned the stick, the millstone turned smoothly around, making her work much easier. This simple sight gave him the idea to make round wheels. He realised that round shapes could roll smoothly over the ground, instead of being dragged or carried. So he invented the wheeled cart.
Thanks to Xi Zhong's invention, people could now carry heavy loads quickly and safely, without getting tired or hurt. His invention changed how people travelled and traded forever.
