Wildlife monitoring（野生动物监测）is the process of watching and recording information about animal populations in natural environments. Traditionally, this required long-term fieldwork. But now, researchers are using AI technology to make the process faster.
In the process of monitoring, AI has an important influence on information collection and image identification（图像识别）. In 2023, the WWF used AI-powered cameras to monitor wildlife in Eastern Australia. These special cameras took more than 7 million photos of different animals. To process these photos, WWF also introduced an AI system called Wildlife
Insights, which can identify（识别）animals and remove（去除）useless photos.
AI also helps with wildlife protection. For example, AI-powered drones（无人机）with heat-sensing cameras can fly over forests or grasslands to monitor animal behavior, populations, and natural homes even at night!
However, AI isn't perfect. Sometimes, it might misidentify animals if the information in it is missing or not complete. Another problem is about people's personal information. Camera drones might record people or communities near wildlife areas by accident, raising questions about who controls this information.
Even with these problems, AI still helps a lot. In the future, AI could save more animals from disappearing—if we use it wisely!
