Eight-year-old Maya and her parents were on vacation. They were traveling in the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachians are the longest groups of mountains in eastern North America. Maya and her parents did not take the trip by car but on foot. They walked along the road called the Appalachian Trail. It is 3,505 kilometres long and goes from one end of the Appalachians to the other!
Maya and her family started the trip near their home in Maryland. Maya was born in Maryland, and she had never left her state before, so she felt so excited about this long trip.
Every evening, Maya and her family would make a fire. She loved that! She also enjoyed sleeping in a tent each night. Maya wanted to remember everything that happened on her vacation. Whenever she came across a new animal, she would draw a picture of it in her diary. But it was usually not easy to do this. Maya learned that she had to be quiet if she wanted the animals to stay. She drew trees and flowers in her diary, too. She thought that flowers were easier to draw than animals. They didn't run away!
