Pelicans are big and awkward-looking(长相笨拙的) birds. They don't knock around much on land. They can fly and they are good swimmers.
They are good at catching fish. Pelicans can see things far away. When they fly and see the fish, they will jump into the water and catch them. They have a big pouch. They get the water out of the pouch and eat all of the fish. They eat as much as about 2 kg of fish every day.
Pelicans like living together and mostly live near oceans and some big lakes. Brown pelicans build homes together and lay(生产) eggs in their homes in spring. The babies come out after about thirty days. Parents feed and protect the babies before they are old enough to take care of themselves.
Brown pelicans almost died out in the past. Fishermen thought pelicans ate too many fish. They killed(杀死) many pelicans and ate their eggs. Pelicans also lost their homes because of humans. At the same time, pesticides(杀虫剂) like DDT killed them. In 1970, people found there were only few pelicans. They tried to solve this problem, so they stopped killing pelicans and using DDT. Slowly, pelicans are not in danger anymore.
