The Chongyang Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, so it is also known as the Double Ninth Festival. Actually it is a special day for old people.
There are many interesting ways to celebrate it. On that day, people usually climb mountains with family to enjoy the beautiful view. Some people wear a plant called zhuyu or hang it on their doors. They believe that zhuyu can keep bad luck away.
At that time, chrysanthemums (菊花) are fully open. The flowers stand for a long life. People drink chrysanthemum wine (酒) as an old custom (习俗). Eating Chongyang cakes is another tradition (传统). It is a kind of steamed cake made of rice flour (粉), nuts and jujubes (枣子).
People also visit their elderly family members and give presents and best wishes to them on that day.
Last year, I spent the day with my grandparents. We made Chongyang cakes together. We chatted, laughed and shared the tasty cakes together. This warm time with them was my favourite part of the whole day.
