(B)
Around the world, many people love to watch horse racing. Each year, thousands of horses take part in races. Most of them don't win, but sometimes there are horses that become famous. One of these horses was from New Zealand, and his name was Phar Lap.
Phar Lap was born in 1926. His father was a champion racehorse, so Phar Lap's owners thought he would run fast, too. But when Phar Lap was young, he was thin and weak, and he lost every race he took part in. His owners weren't happy with him, so they sold him to an American businessman named David J. Davis in 1928. The trainer for Phar Lap was a man from Australian named Harry Telford.
When Telford saw Phar Lap for the first time, he was very surprised to see the horse's bad health. However, he thought Phar Lap could become a successful racehorse, so they began training very hard together. Phar Lap became stronger and grew to 174 centimetres tall. Although he lost his first few races in Australia, in April 1929, he finally won his first race, the Maiden Juvenile Handicap in Rosehill.
After that, Phar Lap became much more popular with people. Between 1929 and 1931, large groups of people came to watch his races in Australia and other countries. During this time, he won 36 of the 41 races he took part in. He also made many new world records. Because of this, Phar Lap will always be remembered as an amazing racehorse in the history of horse racing.
