Just before midnight on July 30th,1997, some skiers in the village of Thredbo heard a big noise. Part of the hillside above the village had collapsed(坍塌) onto two buildings where nineteen people were sleeping.
As soon as the morning came, rescue workers began digging for survivors(幸存者).They used hand tools because they were worried that machines might hurt anyone trapped(困住) under the rocks. Rain and snow kept falling,and there was a danger that more rocks would come down the mountain.

Immediately, rescue workers began carefully taking away the rocks. At the same time,two workers talked to the man. They found out that his name was Stuart Diver and his wife was already dead. He was cold and hungry and had almost given up any hope of being rescued.
Finally,after 12 hours' hard work,Stuart was pulled out. Rescue workers all over the hillside began shouting with joy. In thousands of homes,people were also cheering as they watched the rescue on their televisions.
