Students Volunteer at Chinese Festivals
Chinese traditional festivals are not only a time to celebrate, but also a time to
help and share. Last year, different clubs in our school tried their best to bring joy to
others with their talents and love.
During the Spring Festival, the Art Club visited some elderly people who live
alone. They might feel lonely because their children work far away. The students
cleaned their houses and made red paper-cuts to put up on the windows. These paper-
cuts, with either characters meaning good luck or patterns of flowers and animals,
brightened the whole house. The elderly were also happy to share their stories about
the Spring Festivals in the old days.
At the Dragon Boat Festival, the Cooking Club helped disabled children learn to
make zongzi (rice dumplings). Some of the children could not move their hands well
and needed special help. The club members showed them easy ways to fold the
bamboo leaves step by step. Together they made special zongzi with sticky rice and
different kinds of fillings. How excited the children were when they tasted their first
handmade zongzi!
During the Mid-autumn Festival, the Music Club visited some children with no
parents. The club members taught them different songs about the moon and the
festival and played the guitar for everyone to sing along. The children sang and
laughed, spreading their wings of imagination in the wonderful music and leaving
their sadness behind.
These volunteers made traditional festivals warmer for everyone. They will
continue to show that helping others is also part of Chinese culture.
