Sweet wormwood(青蒿) is a common plant in China. Tu Youyou, a pioneering scientist in the field of
medicine, was born in Ningbo in 1930. She discovered its special power, which has since saved millions of lives.
Malaria(疟疾) is a serious and sometimes deadly disease that has been known to humans for thousands of years. In 1969, Tu was chosen as the
leader of a research program to find a cure for malaria. She studied pharmacy(药学) in college, and traditional Chinese medicine once helped treat her illness when she was young. This experience led her to experiment with natural Chinese treatments(疗法). She and her team talked to doctors of traditional Chinese medicine and read ancient texts. In three months, they found 2,000 treatments and narrowed them down to 380.
Tu and her team started testing these treatments on animals with malaria. They tried and tried, but made little progress. In 1971, after failing 190 times, Tu finally found qinghaosu, or artemisinin, in sweet wormwood. Then, she and her team kept improving the medicine. She even took the risk of testing it on herself to make sure it was safe for people. Finally, they succeeded.
In the early 2000s, the World Health Organization(WHO) advised using artemisinin as a treatment for malaria. Tu called it a true gift from traditional Chinese medicine.
Tu never regretted giving her whole life to her research. On 5 October 2015, Tu was awarded the Nobel Prize
together with two other scientists because of her great achievements. “I feel more rewarded when I see so many patients cured,” she said.
