In Lanxian County, Lvliang City, Shanxi Province, the art of dough sculpture(面塑) has a long history. In ancient times, people used dough sculptures to express their hopes for a better life and to honour their ancestors. Today, during festivals, the locals make different kinds of dough sculptures and put them on display along the streets.
Yuan Jianhua, a national-level inheritor(国家级传承人) of Lanxian County dough sculpture, started making dough sculptures when she was five or six years old. Her daughter, Liu Lili, also began learning from her at a young age and has been practising for many years. Yuan's style was more traditional while her daughter has built upon her mother's skills and created something new.
Yuan says, “In the past, our sculptures were all white, but now we use many colours. There are many kinds of birds and different styles.”
Lanxian County has built a street full of dough sculpture shops. “People can talk and share ideas there. We often sit together and discuss how to create new designs and promote the development of this art,” says Liu Lili.
Yuan not only passes this skill on to her daughter, but also shares it with others. She often brings her works to exhibitions across the country, visits schools to teach children to make dough sculptures, and meets visitors from around the world who come to experience the beauty of this art. Yuan hopes more people can learn about the art of dough sculpture, fall in love with it, and keep it alive.
