Charles Dickens was one of the greatest writers of his time.
Charles Dickens, the son of a worker at the Navy Pay Office, was born on 7th February, 1812. He lived in a poor street as a child. 12-year-old Dickens had to work at a factory. He tried to make a little money to help his family. His poor childhood(童年) had a great influence on Dickens’s books.
Dickens wrote more than 15 novels. Oliver Twist is his second novel. The story described an orphan(孤儿) called Oliver Twist, sold into apprenticeship(学徒工作). After running away from the apprenticeship, Oliver travelled to London, where he met some teen criminals(青少年罪犯). The novel told about the criminals and their terrible lives, and showed the hard lives of many orphans in London. It has been put into a Disney film.
Charles Dickens died at the age of 58 because of too much work, on 9th June, 1870. He wished to be buried(埋葬) in a small place in Rochester, Kent, but the public would not allow it. He was buried in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey, one of the most famous places where many famous people were buried. The flowers from people all around filled his grave.
