Bananas grow best in warm places. Warm places help them thrive, because they can get a lot of rain. They grow on a special plant. Though it looks like a tree with large leaves, the banana plant doesn't have a strong and woody stem. So many people see it as a herb (药草).
When the plants reach their full height, they will start growing flowers. The bananas we eat come from part of these banana flowers. The bananas grow together and they seem like "hands". A hand is made up of 10 to 20 bananas. Growers sometimes call bananas "fingers". Each bunch (丛) of bananas has about 15 hands, so a whole bunch can weigh more than 100 pounds. After seeing the "fingers" for about three months, the green bananas are ready for picking. They will change into yellow later.
Bananas are a popular kind of fruit in different parts of the world. They are sweet and delicious, and they are easy to carry around. Americans began to enjoy bananas in the 1870s. Today, Americans eat more bananas than any other fruit. Every American has over 26 pounds of bananas each year!
