Take a look at just about any Chinese restaurant in the United States and their menus will probably have General Tso's Chicken on the top. But here is a question: Who made this dish? Why is it so popular in America?
The dish first appeared in a restaurant in Taiwan in the 1950s. The chef was Peng Chang-kuei from Hunan province. Just like any Hunan dish, General Tso's Chicken tasted sour酸的, spicy and salty at first. When people asked Peng, "What is the name of the wonderful dish?" He thought for a while and replied, "General Tso liked eating chicken. So I call it General Tso's Chicken." This is how the dish got the name.
In 1973, Peng moved to New York City and opened his first restaurant in America. To attract吸引 more New Yorkers to come, Peng changed the dish a little, much sweeter and less spicy. Soon, more and more people fell in love with the special chicken dish. Even the famous newspapers Washington Post and New York Times put the dish on the first page with big letters. Until now, American people still see General Tso's Chicken as the first choice when they order Chinese food.
