D
Tuesday evening came. The lost children had not been found. Most people had stopped looking for the children and said that it was clear they could never be found. Only Judge Thatcher and his men continued searching the cave. Mrs Thatcher was ill. Aunt Polly’s hair had grown almost white.
In the middle of the night the people of St. Petersburg heard a voice, “They’re found! They’re found!” Most people moved towards the river and welcomed the children. Nobody went to bed again; it was the greatest night the little town had ever seen. The children were taken to Judge Thatcher’s house. During the first half hour a number of people entered the house, seized Tom and Becky and kissed them. The happiness of Aunt Polly and Mrs Thatcher was complete.
Tom told the story of the wonderful adventure, making it even more amazing. He described how he left Becky and saw something unbelievable; how he followed two passages(通道) as far as his kite-line would reach; how he followed the third passage, and then he saw a white spot(点) in the distance(远方) and it looked like daylight; dropped the line, pushed his head and shoulders through a small hole, and saw the broad Mississippi in front of him!
He told how he went back for Becky and told her the good news, and she was too weak and tired to go. He described how he convinced(说服) her; how happy she was when she could see the daylight; how he pushed his way out of the hole and then helped her out; how they sat there; how he saw some men in a boat and told them about their situation; how the men didn’t believe his words at first. “Because,” they said, “you are five miles from the cave.”—then took them to a house, gave them dinner, and then brought them home.

根据第一段“Only Judge Thatcher and his men continued searching the cave.”和最后一段中的“'Because,' they said, 'you are five miles from the cave.'”
“Tom told the story of the wonderful adventure, making it even more amazing.” 故选 A。
根据“He told how he went back for Becky and told her the good news”可知,首先汤姆告诉贝琪他找到了出路;根据“he pushed his way out of the hole and then helped her out”可知,后来他们走出了洞穴;根据“he saw some men in a boat and told them about their situation”可知,紧接着他们遇见了一些坐着船的人并告诉了他们自己的处境;根据“then took them to a house, gave them dinner, and then brought them home”可知,最后他们在一个房子里用餐后被送回了家。故选 D。
根据第三段“how he followed the third passage, and then he saw a white spot in the distance and it looked like daylight... and saw the broad Mississippi in front of him”可推测,汤姆在第三条通道的远处看到的白点实际上是来自密西西比河的日光。

Only Judge Thatcher and his men continued searching the cave.",以及脱险后乘船的男子所说的"you are five miles from the cave",可以推断汤姆和贝琪是在洞穴中迷路的,排除A房子、B森林、C河流三个选项,故选D。
