Have you ever noticed that your fingers become wrinkly(皱的) after staying in water for a long time? Many people think this happens because the skin takes in water. In fact, scientists say it is caused by changes inside our fingers. The blood vessels(血管) under the skin become narrower, so the skin above them bends(褶皱) and forms wrinkles.
But why do we get wrinkly fingers? Do they have a special use? Some scientists think the
wrinkles may help us hold things better in water. The small lines on our fingers may act like little channels. They can help water move away from the skin, so our fingers are not so slippery(滑的). This may make it easier for us to pick up wet objects.
A scientist named Tom Smulders wanted to test this idea. In his experiment, 20 people moved glass marbles(玻璃球) and metal objects from one bowl to another. They tried it with dry hands, wet hands, wrinkly fingers, and non-wrinkly fingers.
The result was interesting. When the objects were dry, wrinkly fingers did not help much. But underwater, people with wrinkly fingers moved the objects about 12 per cent faster. This seemed to show that wrinkly fingers could help people hold things better in water.
However, another group of scientists later repeated the experiment. This time, they got a different result. They found that wrinkly fingers did not make any difference at all. So, do wrinkly fingers really help us underwater? Scientists still do not have a clear answer. More research is needed to discover the truth.
