Why can you go over a book again and again and still be lost when tested on what you read? It may be because you haven't practised memorizing.
Memorizing is a useful way to help us learn. Some of us remember best by listening, some by re-reading, and others by using pictures, tables, and graphs.
Many people believe that repeated reading and drawing diagrams(示意图) can help them remember what they have learnt. But a study from Purdue University suggests that successful learning means being able to recall information correctly at any moment.
"Our view is that learning is not about storing knowledge in memory," said Jeffrey Karpicke, the lead researcher. "It is about retrieving(检索). So it is necessary to make retrieval practice an important part of learning."
The researchers studied two groups of students. Both groups learned the same text within the same period of time. One group drew diagrams to organize information. The other group put aside the text after learning it and tried to recall the concepts from memory.
Then, both groups were tested on what they had learnt. Both groups did well in recalling the information. However, when tested again one week later, the group that practised recalling information from memory scored higher. This shows retrieval practice helps us remember better.
