When I was nine years old, my parents bought me a parrot from a local pet shop. I named him Polly.
Like any young kid would be, I was excited to have a new friend. After a few weeks, however, the feeling of excitement wore off. It’s no big surprise that, being a kid, I was not prepared for the huge responsibility(责任) for taking care of Polly. Neither(也不) were my parents.
Polly had to live his whole life in a small, dirty cage(笼子). Unable to move his wings freely, he was bored out of his mind. The bird ended up living a much shorter life than he would have done in the wild.
It’s a sad story, but it’s a story that has been all too common(普遍的). No bird is born to live in a cage, yet millions are kept behind bars(栏). Most of these birds are improperly cared for and die young. Many people buy pet birds without thinking much, as my family did. They have no idea how much time, money and energy will be needed to care for the birds. When the birds that seemed so cute and beautiful in pet shops turn out to be noisy, many are discarded. Some birds can even go mad because of the boredom and loneliness and they end up feeling. They may pull out their own feathers or peck(啄) over and over again at the bars of their cage.
How can you help? Well, it’s very simple. Please never buy a caged bird. Never support any businesses that keep caged birds as “decorations(装饰品)”. Let more people know that birds should live freely in nature and that they never belong in cages.
