Ⅲ. Read the passage and complete the tasks(根据短文内容完成任务)
The Farmer Who Refused to Give Up
Lin Yifeng is a traditional rice farmer who manages a beautiful piece of land that his family has owned for three generations. Lately, however, Lin has been deeply worried about the health of his farm. A new chemical factory was built a few miles upstream last year, and Lin suspects that industrial waste is slowly leaking into the local river water that floods his rice fields every season.
Soil pollution is a silent crisis because people cannot see it immediately. When factories dump dangerous heavy metals like lead and cadmium into the water, these toxins sink deep into the ground. At the same time, neighbouring farms use excessive amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to kill insects. While these chemicals protect crops in the short term, they also kill beneficial earthworms and microbes(微生物) that naturally keep the soil healthy and fertile.
Recently, Lin noticed that his rice plants are growing much more slowly, and their green leaves are turning an unhealthy yellow. When soil is heavily polluted, crops absorb the poisons through their roots. This means the dangerous chemicals can eventually end up on people’s dinner plates, creating serious health risks for consumers.
Lin is now trying to switch to organic farming methods to save his land. He uses natural compost(堆肥)instead of chemicals, and plants different crops in turn so the soil can rest. But he knows that cleaning polluted soil takes many years of hard work. Standing alone in the middle of his pale yellow rice fields one evening, Lin gazed up at the orange sky and quietly said to himself, “
