Yuan Longping was one of the most respected among them. He spent his whole life researching hybrid rice. His lifelong dream was to help end hunger around the world.
Even when he was over 90 years old, he still worked in the rice fields every day, checking the growth of the crops carefully. Thanks to his hard work and great wisdom, hybrid rice has helped feed hundreds of millions of people.
Another great scientist is Tu Youyou. She and her team found artemisinin after years of hard research and many failures. It has saved lots of lives and helped her win the Nobel Prize. But she never cared about fame or wealth. She kept working quietly in her lab to help more people in need.
These scientists had no interest in wealth or praise. What they cared about most was the country and people. Their love for science, hard work and selflessness are the reasons why we admire them so much.
