Hi everyone! I'm Danni, a 24-year-old volunteer from East China. Since 2020, I've been sharing my love for teaching as a volunteer teacher in schools across Africa and Lebanon.
After graduating from university in 2020, instead of taking up a traditional job, I headed to Africa. I first worked in a small village in Uganda for a year. I worked with the lovely kids as a primary school teacher. I taught Grades 1 to 4 and I set up different kinds of classes for my students, including Chinese language learning, cooking, and crafts(手工). The joy on their faces when they held up their handmade crafts was priceless!
One year later, I moved to Tanzania. The school there was so far from the town that I had to walk through a forest and some fields for an hour before catching a bus that took another 40 minutes to reach the nearest market. I needed to buy fresh vegetables and bread for the 40 kids (aged 3—5) at the school. Every morning, I'd cook simple but healthy meals for them.
In 2022, my journey took me to Lebanon in Asia. Here, I taught arts and crafts to middle school students. My favourite class was when we did Chinese paper-cutting—they were amazed by how a piece of red paper could turn into a beautiful dragon or flower. We also made "paper ice cream" models, where they drew colourful flowers and wrote their names on "cups".
The smiles on the children's faces moved me! The moment I stepped into the classroom, they'd wave excitedly and shout "Teacher Danni". Some even brought me small gifts, like a hand-drawn card or a shiny stone they found on the way to school.
I enjoyed spending beautiful moments with them. Their smiling faces gave me energy and encouraged me to find meaning in volunteer work in different places. I have decided to further develop my dream to help others as a lifetime career(终身事业).
