新素养·文化意识 A new collection has put the spotlight on qipao. Hu Sheguang, known for his creative designs and amazing shows, presented 100 fancy qipao dresses at the CP Centre in Beijing during the 2024 AW Beijing Fashion Week.
Lots of models, all in high heels, walked down the runway to show Hu's qipao designs. There are four different styles: Flowery Woman, French-style Elegance(优雅), Rock 'n' Roll and Neo-Chinese Style. These new designs changed how people viewed the traditional Chinese dress that had been around for a century and gave a new look to the old-fashioned Chinese dress.
Qipao first appeared in the 1920s as a loose dress like the one-piece gowns that men wore and then became popular among young women. About ten years later, the dress was changed to fit women's bodies better, making it a must-have among fashionable women, especially in Shanghai, which was considered the fashion capital of China. In the 1940s, qipao became more form-fitting with a high collar and tight sleeves. By the 1950s, it had become a symbol of elegance. Today, many women in China still wear qipao for formal occasions.
Traditional qipao dresses are usually made of silk, which can be expensive. However, Hu's designs used different materials, including cotton, linen and leather, to make sure that more women could afford(买得起) qipao. Hu also made a change to the dress's buttons(纽扣). Instead of the traditional knot buttons, which can be difficult to tie and untie, he used zippers(拉链) in his designs. "Chinese qipao is usually custom-made to show the wearer's individuality. Qipao is also so inclusive that it can be worn for different events, allowing every woman to be fashionable," Hu said.
1. What is Hu Sheguang known for?
2. How many styles are there in Hu's qipao designs?
3. When did qipao become more form-fitting?
4. How did Hu make sure that more women could afford qipao?
5. What do you think of qipao?
